Chococado Smoothie

“A smoothie, a chocolate shake that contains avocado? … Are you insane?! That sounds disgusting!”

It does sound disgusting, doesn’t it! Funny thing – that… because it tastes brilliant. In fact this high protein, sweet, nutritious and tasty recipe would be utterly incomplete without the avocado – which adds a thick, creamy, milkshake-like texture (especially when coupled with the frozen banana).

INGREDIENTS 

  • 2 scoops (50g) chocolate protein powder
  • ½ avocado (100g)
  • ½ a frozen banana
  • 6 ice cubes
  • ¾ cup of water
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. pure cocoa powder (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Place all the ingredients (except the protein powder) into a blender, and blend thoroughly.

2) Add the protein powder into the mixture, and blend on low power for 5 seconds.

3) Serve it up.

 

Note: The reason for not blending the protein powder on a high power is that good quality whey protein is fairly fragile and can denature fairly easily – such as when exposed to high heat in cooking, OR if blended on a high speed for a long time.

Adding the protein powder at the end should not make a negative difference to the taste of the end product, but will make a positive difference to the quality of the protein in your shake.

 

This shake could be a great snack to break up your day, if you don’t have time for a full meal.

It could also be a fantastic breakfast alternative, if a low carb protein based breakfasts doesn’t tickle your fancy.

 

My job as a nutritionist and trainer is to get people the results they want (even when they don’t do everything I tell them)! And these types of shake can sometimes be a fair compromise to a solid-food meal.

The Chococado Smoothie is an easy way to bump up the protein, fibre and healthy fat content of the diet – in a way that creates the illusion of drinking a milkshake!

 

This shake fulfils 4 very important principles that I like people to abide to when they’re looking for better body composition:

  • Carb controlled
  • High protein
  • High Fibre
  • Presence of some healthy fats.

The fibre and healthy fats will help control blood sugar (which will be further aided by the cinnamon and stevia). Blood sugar regulation is hugely important for dropping body fat and controlling the hormone insulin.
